What to do straight away

• Keep everyone away from the affected socket, switch, appliance or area.
• If it is safe to reach and there's no water or visible damage near it, switch off at the main switch on your consumer unit.
• Never touch exposed wires, and never touch electrical equipment with wet hands.
• If there is a fire, get out and call 999. Don't use water on an electrical fire.
• If you smell gas, leave and call the National Gas emergency line on 0800 111 999.
• Call us and describe what you're seeing.

Common electrical emergencies

Loss of power

If the whole property goes off, check whether neighbours are affected too. If they are, it's likely a network fault — call 105 to report a power cut. If it's just you, the problem is probably within your installation.

Partial power loss

Losing one circuit or one floor usually means a breaker or RCD has tripped. If it won't reset, or trips again straight away, leave it off and call an electrician.

Consumer unit repeatedly tripping

Burning smells or sparks

A burning or fishy smell, or sparks from a socket, switch or board, is a serious warning. Switch off if safe, don't use the circuit and call us immediately.

Damaged sockets or switches

Cracked, scorched or loose accessories can expose live parts. Stop using them and keep children away until they've been made safe.

Faulty electrical equipment

If an appliance trips the power, unplug it and leave it unplugged. If the fault continues with the appliance removed, the problem is in the fixed wiring.
